Press Release To Announce Launch of PR Blog

I think this is a first. Ken Makovsky sent out a press release on Feb. 1st to announce that he had launched a blog called My Three Cents (on Jan. 9th!!!)

Proof that press releases might not exactly be the best way to go to announce a blog, as of Feb 4th, only one blog links to it according to Technorati. And that's from Steve Rubel. (I guess I'll be the second.)

I struggle with pros and cons of sending out a news release to announce a blog. It seems counter-intuitive to bloggers. But if you're trying to reach the folks who may be interested in what you have to say, but who haven't yet caught on to RSS readers, what's the best way to approach it? I suppose it's entirely possible that you an influential enough blogger like Ken may actually drive people to discover blogs. If this happens because of a news release, that would be a good thing, wouldn't it?

There seems to be no real reason to send out a press release about a blog, and I would counsel against it.

I'm maybe a little less dogmatic than Jeremy on this but I'm far from convinced that it's the best way to go.
